Emotional Literacy Support Assistant

Emotional Literacy Support Assistant

At Heron Academy we have 2 qualified ELSA staff.

What is an ELSA?

An Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) is a specialist trained to support children and young people in understanding and managing their emotions. ELSAs work under the guidance of educational psychologists and focus on nurturing emotional well-being and resilience, which are crucial for effective learning and personal development.

The Role of an ELSA in Our School

At our school, the ELSA plays a vital role in ensuring pupils feel emotionally supported and understood. Recognising that our pupils may face unique challenges, our ELSA provides tailored interventions and a safe, nurturing environment to help them thrive emotionally and socially.

1. Building Emotional Awareness

The ELSA helps pupils recognise and name their emotions, understand what triggers them, and develop strategies to manage these feelings effectively.

2. Developing Social Skills

Through activities and role-playing, the ELSA supports pupils in building meaningful relationships, improving communication, and navigating social situations with confidence.

3. Promoting Self-Esteem

By encouraging positive self-talk, setting achievable goals, and celebrating successes, the ELSA boosts pupils' confidence and belief in their abilities.

4. Providing a Listening Ear

The ELSA is always available to listen without judgment, offering a safe space where pupils can express themselves openly.

5. Tailored Interventions

Our ELSA develops individualized programs to address specific needs, such as managing anxiety, coping with loss, or building resilience.

How Does the ELSA Work?

The ELSA works closely with teachers, parents, and other professionals to identify pupils who would benefit from additional emotional support.

They conduct sessions one-on-one or in small groups, using evidence-based techniques to:

  • Develop emotional vocabulary

  • Teach relaxation techniques

  • Foster problem-solving skills

  • Address specific issues like friendship difficulties or emotional regulation

These sessions are designed to complement the educational goals of the school, ensuring a holistic approach to pupil development.
