Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support

Our approach

At Heron Academy, we take a positive and supportive approach to behaviour. We understand that all behaviour is a form of communication and reflects a pupil’s individual needs, experiences and level of emotional regulation.

Our aim is to ensure that every pupil feels safe, understood and ready to learn. We achieve this through a consistent, nurturing approach that supports pupils to develop communication, regulation and independence over time.

Our practice is supported by Team Teach, which provides staff with a shared framework for promoting positive behaviour, using de-escalation strategies and responding safely where needed. Staff are team teach trained, with annual refresher coursers and weekly practice of a team teach strategy.

A consistent and supportive environment

We provide a structured and predictable environment where pupils feel secure. Clear routines, strong relationships and consistent expectations help to reduce anxiety and support engagement in learning.

Staff take time to understand each pupil’s individual profile, including their communication, sensory and emotional needs. This allows learning and support to be carefully adapted so that pupils can succeed.

Communication is central to our approach. Pupils are supported to express themselves using a range of methods, including visuals, symbols, AAC and Makaton, ensuring every pupil has a voice.

Supporting regulation and behaviour

We recognise that many of our pupils are still developing the skills they need to manage their emotions. Staff support pupils to understand how they are feeling and to develop appropriate strategies to regulate.

Approaches such as the Zones of Regulation are used across the school to support this learning. Pupils are given regular opportunities for movement, sensory input and structured breaks to help them remain calm and engaged.

Staff are skilled in recognising early signs of anxiety or distress and respond in a calm and supportive way. This helps to prevent situations from escalating and supports pupils to feel safe.

Teaching and reinforcing positive behaviour

Positive behaviour is taught, modelled and reinforced throughout the school day. Pupils are supported to develop communication, social understanding and independence through carefully planned teaching and daily interactions.

Staff consistently recognise and celebrate pupils’ achievements. This may include verbal praise, encouragement and meaningful rewards that are appropriate to the individual pupil. By focusing on success, we help pupils to build confidence and self-esteem.

Responding to behaviour

When pupils experience difficulty, staff respond calmly and consistently. The priority is always to support the pupil to regulate and feel safe. This may involve reducing demands, offering reassurance or providing time and space.

In some situations, additional support may be needed to ensure the safety of the pupil and others. In line with our Team Teach training, any physical intervention is used only as a last resort. It is always reasonable, proportionate and necessary, and carried out with care and respect.

Following any incident, staff reflect on what has happened and adapt support where needed. This ensures that our approach remains responsive to each pupil.

Working together

Consistency is essential in supporting behaviour. All staff follow shared approaches and work closely with therapists and families to ensure that support is aligned and effective.

We value strong partnerships with parents and carers. By working together, we can provide consistent support and achieve the best outcomes for every pupil.

A safe and nurturing school

We are committed to providing a safe, respectful and inclusive environment for all pupils. Through our Positive Behaviour Support approach and the principles of Team Teach, we support pupils to develop the skills they need to engage in learning, build positive relationships and prepare for the next stage of their lives.
