Literacy
At Heron Academy, literacy is a gateway to communication, life skills, and self-expression for every pupil. Our Literacy programme is designed to meet the diverse needs of our pupils, ensuring that reading, writing, speaking and listening are accessible and meaningful for all.
At Heron Academy, we teach phonics using the Little Wandle programme, which provides a clear, structured and highly consistent approach to early reading. As a SEND school, we carefully adapt the pace, delivery and supporting resources to meet the needs of all learners, ensuring every pupils able to develop secure early reading skills at a level appropriate to them. Teaching is multisensory, highly interactive and supported through repetition, overlearning, visual cues, communication systems and individualised scaffolds.

World Book Day 2025
To celebrate World Book Day, along with dressing up as our favourite book characters, we transformed our door into book covers.

Literacy Week 2025
During Literacy Week, our head teacher and deputy head shared their love of reading by visiting classes to read their favourite books to the pupils. The chosen stories included Oh Dear, Look What I Got! and Hot Food Nice by Michael Rosen, as well as Lost in the Snow by Ian Beck. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed listening to the stories and engaging with the storytelling.
